Cunard Honours Mersey Heritage

Merseyside Maritime Museum has landed a £25,000 sponsorship from Cunard for its recently opened exhibition 'Liverpool to New York - the only way to cross'. Given its long history as one of the major Atlantic shipping lines, formerly based in Liverpool, the deal which makes Cunard the museum's biggest ever business sponsor is especially appropriate.

Running until 14 August, the show recreates the experience of travelling on transatlantic liners over the last century, with a focus on the golden years of travel from the 1920s to the 1960s. Visitors will get a taste of life on board and meet characters ranging from glamorous first class passengers to the crew below decks.

Items on display include a collection of medals and an engraved silver loving cup presented to Capt Arthur Rostron of the Cunard liner Carpathia forhis rescue of all survivors from Titanic . Another prize exhibit is a 4m model of the Birkenhead built Cunard liner Mauretania II . At a reception announcing the deal last month, David Fleming, director of National Museums Liverpool, which runs the Merseyside Maritime Museum said, ?Business sponsorship for our exhibitions programme is vital if we are to live up to the massive expectations of Liverpool?s culture and keep these important shows free for visitors. ? The exhibition is part of Sea Liverpool 2005 and the national SeaBritain celebrations.
