Improvements in Full Swing at Skandia Harbour

Excavation, piling and the laying of foundations are in full swing at the eastern Skandia Harbour container yard in the Swedish Port of Goteborg . The quay and the surfaces within the quay are being reinforced while dredging increases the depth alongside 500m of 1,200m long southern quay from 12m to 14.2m in order to handle the higher capacity boxships now coming into service.

The rebuilding of the container terminal at Skandia Harbour involves new piling, lighter fill, recasting of the cathead at the edge of the quay, reinforcement of the quay with sheetpiles and the laying of a new crane rail to accommodate wider cranes.
The rebuilding of the container terminal at Skandia Harbour involves new piling, lighter fill, recasting of the cathead at the edge of the quay, reinforcement of the quay with sheetpiles and the laying of a new crane rail to accommodate wider cranes.

The deeper draught requires the quay to be secured with piling inside the crane tracks and truck paths to take the weight from higher container stacks as well as piling at the edge of the quay. A lighter, higher quality fill is replacing older fill dating to the 1960s and a new crane track is being laid 10m inside the previous inner track, offering a possible gauge for future container cranes of 30m.

The track reflects the Port of Goteborg's belief that larger cranes will be required if the port is to retain and further its role as a Nordic shipping hub.

The works are scheduled for completion by mid-2006.
