Heavyweight Winch Marks Anniversary

Germany based HATLAPA recently celebrated its 85th anniversary and in the same week shipped a 56 ton towing winch, the largest produced in the company's history, from its home port of Uetersen.

Hatlapa has shipped its largest ever winch for Ferrostaal and Harms Bergungs new deepsea tug.
Hatlapa has shipped its largest ever winch for Ferrostaal and Harms Bergungs new deepsea tug.

The winch will be installed on a deep sea tug which is presently being built by the Mutzelfeldt Shipyard in Cuxhaven. The order was placed by Ferrostaal, of Essen and Harms Bergung of Hamburg, which will be operating the tug for deep sea transport, salvage and rescue and offshore support.

The huge winch has been built to a 'waterfall' design, with two rope drums arranged one above the other accommodating the towing ropes. The dynamic pull of the winch is 100 tons and the static holding load 250 tons. The upper rope drum is belayed with a 64 mm diameter towing wire of 1.2 km length.

The lower drum is split type, with the same diameter towing wire but 800m long and a rope guy 300m long.

The winch features a stepless drive developed and patented by HATLAPA. Frequency inverter controlled electric motors and corresponding controls allow stepless operation, guaranteeing safe operation at very high rope speeds of up to 45m/min.

In cooperation with Ferrostaal and Harms Bergung, the winch was transported from the port of Uetersen to the Mutzefeldt Shipyard in Cuxhaven on 15 November 2004.
