Hydraulic Modelling Alive and Well at HR Wallingford

HR Wallingford in the UK has unveiled details of a major investment it has made in a new modelling hall that covers an area more than 11,000m 2.Responding to record demand for hydraulic modelling, HR Wallingford is replacing its well-known modelling hall that has served engineers in the UK and around the world for the last 60 years.
The new £3.5m hydraulic modelling hall rises from the debris of the old modelling hall, and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Its extra capability can also be used in conjunction with computational modelling so that highly complex hydraulic situations can be analysed.
The new Froude Modelling Hall (to be named after the Victorian pioneer of hydraulic scale modelling) is scheduled for official opening this Spring, but with construction already completed, its new facilities - such as wave basins/wave-current basins (for port and harbour studies), wave flumes (for coastal defence testing) and hydraulic flumes / basins (for river engineering and flood studies) - are already being utilised.
Demand for hydraulic modelling is at an all time high, according to HR Wallingford Director Keith Powell, who said this reflects the present growth and investment in many water engineering sectors. The company's physical models are already being used for studies in Libya, Germany, Madagascar, Qatar, Kuwait, Uganda, Belgium, Hong Kong as well as the UK.
