Mott MacDonald to Provide Design Services for Wind Farm

Mott MacDonald has been appointed as a sub-consultant by AREVA T&D Systems inStafford in the UK to provide electrical design services for an offshore wind farm to be built 7km off the coast of Walney Island in Cumbria.

The £100m project is being built by a consortium comprising Kellogg, Brown and Root and Vestas Celtic Wind Technology (KBRV) on behalf of Barrow Offshore Wind Limited.

The wind farm will contribute towards the UK government's renewable energy targets to the year 2010.

The wind farm will consist of 30 turbines which will be connected via a 33kV subsea cable to a 33/132kV substation mounted on an offshore platform. An additional 132kV subsea cable will then connect the wind farm to the shore near to an existing 132/400kV substation at Heysham. High winds in the area provide for large scale wet renewable projects, which have the advantage of causing little environmental impact.

Mott MacDonald's role involves producing the overall design of the power system protection and equipment interface engineering for the complete system. In addition, the consultant will ensure equipment design and layout at the offshore platform is co-ordinated with the designs for the platform itself, with an emphasis on simplicity and safety.

Construction work will begin in early 2005 with commissioning of the wind farm expected towards the end of the year.
