    With Berth 1 of the Eurogate Container Terminal nearing completion after 18 months of modernisation works, five giant container cranes arrived in the Port of Hamburg last month following an eight week voyage by sea from Shanghai.

  • Study Focus on Fast Rescue Boats Recovery

    Bristol based Dag Pike Associate s (DPA) has completed a study for the Health and Safety Executive in the UK designed to improve the performance of the Fast Rescue Boats (FRCs) used on stand-by and multi-role vessels used in the North Sea offshore oil operations. The study looked at both the health and safety aspects of the crews operating the FRCs as well as improving their performance so that they could operate in more severe conditions.

  • Moves Towards 'Almost Zero Emissions Engines'

    Italian classification society RINA has type approved a device which is a significant step towards the 'almost zero emission engine' for passenger ships. The system, known as Turbotransducer , was developed by Italy's Mec System srl andapplies micro-emulsion technology to marine diesel engines to deliver significant reductions in smoke visibility and NOx emission without increasing fuel consumption. 

  • Mermaid Uncovered at Seawork

    Dorset UK based Mermaid Marine Engines Ltd chose Seawork 2005 International asthe venue to launch the first 'All British' marine diesel engine for many years. The new engine, due to be on the market by September, is code named JM4 to reflect the close cooperation between base engine manufacturer JCB and Mermaid acting as marinisers.

  • Economies of Scale with Largest Reduction Gearbox

    German manufacturer Reintjes GmbH has shipped the largest reduction gearbox it has ever made from its Hamelin plant to the shipyard JJ Sietas KG in Hamburg, where it will be installed on a container ship for Canadian shipping line Oceanic .

    Operators of selected types of Rolls-Royce thrusters are being offered a new concept for thrusters service aimed at reducing the amount of time spent overhauling thrusters when the vessel is in dry dock.

    Dutch Elektromotorenfabriek Nijmegen (EN) has introduced a new series of submersible motors which are used for submersible drives in the sand and gravel dredging industries.     The European Marine Equipment Council (EMEC) has concluded a successful general assembly in the Polish port of Gdansk, setting out its vision for maintaining the industry's competitive edge in the global marketplace. A key element is the creation of the initiative EMECRID , which will lead the Research, Innovation and Development agenda for the European maritime equipment and service sector. 

  • New Owner for Newage

    Coventry UK based mechanical driveline equipment specialist Newage Transmissions Ltd , well known in the maritime sector for its PRM marine gearboxes, has been acquired by Cambridgeshire based Thornycroft (1862) Ltd . Newage has become a subsidiary company of Thornycroft (1862) Ltd with immediate effect. 

  • Growth for Port of London

    The Port of London Authority hasreported a 4.5% boost in cargo handling last year, taking its total to 53.3 million tons. The PLA's latest Annual Review also reports that steps are underway to bring three unused wharves on the River Thames in Central London back into working use.

  • 'THV Patricia' Escorts Her Majesty The Queen

    THV Patricia , the flagship vessel of Trinity House , was deployed to lead the Royal Squadron last month at celebrations of the International Fleet Review , when some 150 vessels from 35 nations participated in commemorations to mark the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

    HR Wallingford in the UK has announced that it is participating in a groundbreaking research and development project - the Ripples DRI programme - which is funded by the Office of Naval Research in the US. 

  • VT Takes a Bow in Portsmouth Harbour

    VT Shipbuilding 's 1,000 ton bow section for the first of class British Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer HMS Darling hassailed from Portsmouth to Glasgow. The steel structure is being transported on the barge VT Woolston having left a canalling lock in the Portsmouth Naval Base after being hooked up to an ocean going tug for the tow to BAE 's Scotstoun yard. The voyage via the English Channel and Irish Sea was scheduled to take four or five days.

    Oceanographic services provider Fugro GEOS Ltd has been awarded a British Safety Council International Safety Award for2004. Only companies with low accident rates are eligible to apply, but winners must also have good safety policies and safety plans and commitment to health and safety at the highest board level. They must detail their health and safety officers' qualifications and provide details of significant advances they have made in health and safety for the year.

    Fassmer Shipyard has delivered the coastal police patrol boat Damerow , completing a series of four tough and fast 25.5m long boats, built for service in east Germany since 1997.

    A reduction of commuter and tourist road traffic in the Lake of Constance region on the German-Swiss border is one of the main reasons for two new 33.64 m long passenger catamarans and the new shipping company operating them.

  • Titan Responds to Tsunami Casualty

    The globally based marine salvage company Titan Maritime LLC has just been awarded a contract to remove the wreck of the 6,693dwt cement carrier Sinar Andalas from the port of Lhok Nga in the Aceh province of Indonesia. 

  • Dutch Duo Sign at Seawork

    Seawork again demonstrated its growing international significance last month when Dutch builders Damen Shipyards chose it as the venue for signing a letter of intent to build a Shoalbuster 2208 tug for fellow countryman (and woman) Jack and Wendy van Dodewaard, owner/operators of Herman Sr BV. 

  • US/European Teamwork Meets OPA90 Extension

    Owners and operators of bulk carriers, container vessels and other non-tankers now have very little time to comply with new US spill response requirements. The Oil Pollution Act 1990 response regime for tankers is being extended to all non-tankers of 400GT and over carrying oil as fuel for main propulsion. Owners and operators have until August 8 to obtain US Coast Guard (USCG) approval of Non Tank Vessel Response Plans if they are to continue to trade in US waters. 

  • Chinese Yard's Tug Export Boom

    The Nanjing Tong Kah Shipbuilding Yard , located some 300km up China's Yangtze River from the sea, is churning out barges and tugs for overseas owners. The relatively new yard has recently delivered two 2,400hp tugs and two more are nearing completion. 

  • Pilot Boats and Line Boats for Kuwait

    Early in 2005 the Naseeb Maritime Company of Kuwait took delivery of three new pilot boats and two new line-handling boats to ease ship handling in their port.

  • Duke of Normandy - a Very Special Shoalbuster

    The new, shallow draft, multi-purpose tug Duke of Normandy was completed in May and interrupted her delivery voyage to Jersey to be displayed at last month's Seawork 2005 exhibition in Southampton. This new flagship for Jersey Harbours, in the UK Channel Islands, was christened on the 8 July in St Helier and is now fully operational. 

  • 'Fairmount Sherpa' - the First of a Formidable Fleet

    Ocean towage and heavy transportation specialists Fairmount Marine took delivery of the long range deep sea tug Fairmount Sherpa in May and the vessel has already sailed on its maiden tow. This vessel is the first of a new class of five 200 ton bollard pull tugs ordered from Niigata Shipbuilders in Japan. Prior to leaving on its first job Fairmount Sherpa was formally named by Dionne van den Berg, 12-year-old daughter of Fairmount's president Henk van den Berg. 

  • Robert Allan is Awarded a Medal by RINA

    Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) 'Small Craft Group Medal for 2004' was awarded Mr Robert G Allan PEng, FRINA, FSNAME at their Annual Meeting in London in April. The award was made in recognition of 'His contribution to the field of workboat design, and in particular for his innovative work in the development of tugboats for all types of operations.'

    On the 15 June, Fairplay Schleppdampfschiffs-Reederei Richard Borchard Gmbh held a reception at the Royal Rowing and Sailing Club 'De Maas' at Veerdam, Rotterdam to celebrate their 100th anniversary.

    It has been confirmed that the historic steam tug/tender Daniel Adamson has been placed on the National Register of Historic Vessels (NRHV) Designated List , maintained by the National Historic Ships Committee (NHSC). This is a significant step forward for the Daniel Adamson Preservation Society , currently working to restore to operating condition Britain's last surviving steam tug/tender, built on Merseyside in 1903.

    Turkish tug owner and shipbuilder Sanmar Denizcilik Makine ve Ticaret Ltd are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and continue to forge ahead, with news of a healthy order book and a number of important deliveries. The current order book lists 11 vessels under construction, with eight expected to be delivered by the end of 2005.
