The latest newbuild from Newhaven UK based Lochin Marine International Ltd is an 11m vessel with its engine room fully accessible from the cockpit.

The engine room contains a Scania 12 litre marine engine equipped with the company's electronic Engine Management System (EMS). The single 650hp engine will take the craft to a top speed above 26 knots although its optimal economy of below 4.5 litres per mile is achieved at 20 knots.

Scania has also enjoyed recent success in its home market, winning an order to supply 20 of its 16 litre marine engines which will be used to repower the five largest ferries in Sweden operated by the Swedish Road Administration Ferry Operations.

The ferries operate on the Swedish west coast, four at Honoleden and one at Lysekil.

The ferries are currently equipped with engines dating to the mid-1990s. In response to demand for good fuel economy combined with low emissions, SRA Ferry Operations chose Scania for the repower.

The engines combine with a CRT filter, consisting of a particulate filter and an oxidation catalyst, to cut emission levels dramatically.

As with the Lochin boat, the 16 litre engines are equipped with Scania's EMS, which allows programming of each individual engine to meet specific customer demand for parameters such as revs and workload. The system monitors and processes thousands of pieces of data every second and evaluates the information to adjust injection timing and the amount of fuel injected to ensure optimum combustion and fuel consumption in response to operating conditions.

The repowering will begin at the end of this year at Djupviks Shipyard, a member of the Swede Ship Marine Group on the country's west coast.
