VSPs Enter PSV Market

Voith Turbo Marine is entering the market for Platform Supply Vessels with an order to supply two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSPs) for a vessel being built at the Astilleros Gondon shipyard in Spain for Norwegian owner Ostensjo Rederi AS .

The two Spanish newbuilds will be the first PSVs to use Voith Schneider Propellers.

The two size 32 R5/265 VSPs will be delivered in March of 2006 for a vessel due to become operational early in 2007. These units are suitable for a variety of applications on vessels with high demands made of drive and steering systems. A PSV driven by two VSPs is said to require 10 to 20% less power, depending on load and sea conditions, saving on fuel cost and extending the service life.

A series of model tests optimised hull shape and blade profile, enabling Voith Turbo Marine to succeed in supplying a ship's concept which has a positive influence on the power uptake as well as the sea motion behaviour and manoeuvrability of the PSV.

A special feature of the VSP is its roll damping capacity.

At standstill and when not at full sail, the fast reversibility of the VSPs can be used to reduce the effects of high seas on the ship. This is particularly important in loading and offloading operations, where a rolling vessel can slow down the process or stop it altogether.

The VSP in combination with the Voith Roll Stabilisation (VSR) reduces this risk and thus widens the applications window.
