Mandatory ECDIS for HSC's

High speed craft could soon be required to carry ECDIS by 1 July 2008 following recommendations last month by the IMO 's Safety of Navigation sub-committee.
The proposals, representing an amendment to the IMO's present HSC Code , apply to newbuild cargo-laden vessels as well as those licensed to carry more than 100 passengers.
They will now be considered by its Maritime Safety Committee at its meeting next May and if approved, would be formally adopted the following December.
A year would then be set aside for formal objections, before the rule is finally accepted.
If it is, it will come into force a year later.
