Robert Allan is Awarded a Medal by RINA

Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA) 'Small Craft Group Medal for 2004' was awarded Mr Robert G Allan PEng, FRINA, FSNAME at their Annual Meeting in London in April. The award was made in recognition of 'His contribution to the field of workboat design, and in particular for his innovative work in the development of tugboats for all types of operations.'
RINA noted in their citation that Allan had 'Taken his company's early experience in the development of coastal and harbour tugs in British Columbia and led it into innovative areas of tug application worldwide.
This included escort tugs, ship assist tugs, and shallow draft tugs. Under his direction the scope of work performed has also broadened to include patrol vessels, search and rescue craft, rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), fishing vessels, research vessels, and icebreakers. There is no question that he has been at the forefront of developments in tug design for all types of activity, creating successful craft by integrating the knowledge accumulated over many years practical experience with the insights gained from research using the technologies of the 21st century.'
In accepting the award Mr Robert G Allan said, 'I accept this award with pleasure on behalf of my grandfather, my father and a very dedicated and capable staff at Robert Allan Ltd, as a commemoration of our 75 years in business! In particular, I must acknowledge the significant commitment and dedication to Robert Allan Ltd. of Mr Hans Muhlert, PEng (Vice President), Mrs Carol Nilson (Office Manager), and Mr Ken Harford, PEng (Engineering Manager), whose contribution to the firm's expertise and operations over many years has been invaluable.'
In 2005, Robert Allan Ltd commemorates 75 years of continuous business as consulting naval architects. The firm serves a truly international clientele from its offices in Vancouver.
