Big Handler Lifts Poole Productivity

Poole Harbour Commissioners have recently taken delivery of a Sennebogen 870R Special Material Handler , the first machine of its kind to be utilised by a British Port.

The first Sennebogen 870R material handler in a UK port is seen at work unloading scrap in Poole Harbour.

Harbour engineer Dick Appleton and PHC's workshop manager Paul Gillingham decided that a large hydraulic materials handler was the way forward for handling the port's bulk, scrap and hook cargoes.

To evaluate the right machine for operations at Poole, an approach was made to UK and Ireland Sennebogen distributor E H Hassell & Sons Limited, where operations director Ian Hassell arranged for PHC personnel to visit Istanbul. In the Turkish port, Sennebogen equipment was having a big impact on port operations, boosting productivity whilst delivering low running costs.

PHC personnel were able to witness the machines loading up to 20,000 tons of scrap and unloading rebar.

On subsequent visits to the Sennebogen and Hassell factories the specific needs of Poole Harbour were discussed and a machine designed to maximise flexibility, productivity and control whilst accommodating an extensive range of attachments.

The order then placed by PHC specified a 5m high pylon between the upper structure and the crawler frame and a 25m special materials handling boom which gives up to 24m reach for optimum ship loading.

An additional 17 ton car body counterweight ensures maximum stability, with two swing gear to evenly distribute side loading on the swing bearing for fast duty cycle operations.

Power is provided by a latest generation Deutz 300kW water cooled engine and there is an additional 2,500 litre bunded fuel tank to reduce refuelling intervals.

A sky lift special port cab is hydraulically adjustable up to eye level, approximately 13m above the ground, and special hydraulics control circuits accommodate the various attachments' demands. There is a quick change coupler for those attachments, which include a 3m 3scrap grab, a 4m 3clamshell grab, and a 15 ton hook. Special equipment enables the machine arm to be removed from the ship in the event of a machine total failure.

There is a safe load indicator fully compliant with Dock Regulations and overload tests were carried out both at the factory and on site.

Specially painted in Poole Harbour colours the crane was delivered to Poole Harbour and, after full training for PHC staff, it has been confirmed that production rates are vastly improved.
