The Elegant No 2 was built by the Kumamoto Dock Company in 1999 and was returned to the builder recently for the repower. The installation features a single central MTU 12V396 delivering 1,979hp at 1,946rpm through ZF BWK750 marine gears to drive a Kamewa 56BII water jet.

Flanking the MTU, a pair of Cummins KTA50-M2s deliver 1,875hp at 1,950rpm to conventional 1.08m by 0.95m propellers through ZF BWK4640 gears.

The combined propulsion system gives the 36.25m LOA, 138gt ferry a 35 knot top speed and delivers 32 knots at an economical 1,750rpm. This enables Elegant No 2 to carry 230 passengers and a crew of five while completing a run between the Japanese ports of Nagasaki and Sanggoto in 90 minutes.
