Public Investment Funding for Boxship

Investment fund issuing house Hansa Hamburg Shipping launched its new 1,600 TEU containership MS Flottbek last month to coincide with the Port of Hamburg's 816th Anniversary celebrations. The vessel provided an impressive finale for the traditional Grand Ship Parade along the River Elbe and in the Port of Hamburg.

Hansa Hamburg Shipping financed the MS Flottbek by means of a public investment fund. The ship should enjoy a bright future, with Baltic Sea container traffic in Hamburg alone increasing by 94% between 2003 and 2004. The container terminal business is likewise enjoying above average growth in the key Baltic Sea ports.

The initiators of the shipping investment fund that owns the MS Flottbek are confident that demand for ice class feeder vessels will continue to grow.

MS Flottbek , like her sister ships MS Eilbeek and MSReinbek , was built by the Meyer Werft shipyard at Papenburg and has Hamburg as its port of registry.

Following the ceremony, MSFlottbek sailed from Hamburg to Antwerp to pick up its first consignment of containers. The 1,600 TEU feeder features a combination of technical innovations including a cargo hold configuration comprising an open top midship section and side sections with hydraulic hatch covers, which enables exceptionally short loading and unloading times.

MS Flottbek is built to Finnish/ Swedish 1A Super ice class specification so it can berth in key ports like St Petersburg or Montreal in winter without needing icebreaker support. Its relatively shallow draft enables it to berth at all major container ports on the Baltic Sea coast.

The vessel also has separate cargo holds for dangerous goods and a passenger deck with six cabins for up to eight passengers.
