WL Delft Hydraulics Leads Remote Sensing Project
01 Jun 2005
WLDelft Hydraulics and partners Argoss, NLR and Van Oord NV have received funding from the National User Support Programme for Remote Sensing in the Netherlands for the Restscod-2 project, a project that follows-on from the recently completed Restscod-1 , which was conducted by the same project team.
The aim of Restscod-2 is to demonstrate a new technique for synoptic (near) real-time 'now casting, ' 'hind casting' and short-time forecasting of turbidity caused by dredging.
The method is based on the combination of information from optical remote sensing data, water quality modelling of sediment transport, and in-situ data, making use of known or expected uncertainties in the individual information sources.
This combination enhances the end user information compared to the information contained in the individual sources, by optimising reliability, spatial and/ or temporal coverage, providing a more effective forecasting capability.
The new technique is expected to be used in the future as an operational tool by the dredging industry for project planning, compliance monitoring during the dredging and hind casting of turbidity fields in the case of disputes.
