Pontoon Project transforms Thames Terminal
01 Jun 2005
UK marine engineers Houlder Limited have completed a residential pontoon contract at Wandsworth on London's River Thames. Houlder have installed the mooring facility for river residents, providing quick access to central London.
The development is made up of nine 30m berthing pontoons accessed by a 50m walkway pontoon from the river bank via a 27m bridge and will berth 17 boats. The development is adjacent to a new complex of residential flats which were built on the site of an old oil terminal. Old tanker wharfs on the Thames were demolished to make way for the new pontoons.
The new facilities include features such as power, water, sewage and telephone together with satellite and terrestrial TV and digital radio. Security measures include a remotely operated gate providing access to the berthing area from landside.
Houlder project manager Mark Beck said, 'We have provided a high specification facility for residents living on the river, probably the best currently available on the Thames.'
