Stealth Boats Slip Into Seawork
01 Jun 2005
Buckinghamshire based Multihull Boat Services (MBS), which has taken on the UK and Ireland import and distribution of South Africa's Stealth Boats , will make a first appearance at Seawork 2005 with a 6.5m catamaran hulled Stealth Sports RIB on the floating pontoon.
The Stealth Sports boat has its origins in a South African defence forces funded research programme undertaken at Stellenbosch University. The aim of the programme was to investigate the feasibility of combining a catamaran hull with a hydrofoil system. The result was the Hysucat, which is now a proven technology applied to a range of vessels including large ferries, police launches, cats and RIBs. The catamaran hull provides space, speed and stability while the hydrofoil system, lifting the boat onto plane at low speeds, delivers the additional advantage of economy.
The 6.5m Stealth Sports boat at Seawork is suited to a variety of tasks, with its large useable deck attractive for divers while its inherent stability lends itself to safety and support roles at marine sports events, where the boat would also be ideal for use as a camera platform.
The hulls are made by Stealth Boats in Gordons Bay, Cape Town and the range is split into 5.3m and 6.5m RIBs and their big brothers, 42ft and 52ft power cats. One off prototypes of 6.5m RIBs with cabins, 8m trimaran RIBs, and 8m Hysucat fitted RIBs have been built to order.
The 6.5m Stealth Sports is a category C vessel which satisfies all RCD requirements.
Engines which can be fitted extend upwards to twin 90hp combinations which can propel the craft to 42 knots.
