Work Load Up for ISU
01 Jun 2005
Members of the International Salvage Union recovered over 700,000 tons of pollutants during salvage operations last year. Emergency assistance was provided worldwide for 266 vessels carrying cargoes and bunkers with a potential to cause pollution, up from 218 in 2003. This represents a significant increase in both the number of salvage cases and the tonnage of pollutants recovered.
The results of the ISU's latest annual Pollution Prevention Survey show that oils, chemicals, other pollutants and bunker fuel recovered last year totalled 734,582 tons, a 21% leap on the 2003 figure of 605,677 tons.
ISU president Hans van Rooij said, 'ISU salvors have recovered nearly 12 million tons of potential pollutants in the 11 years since the survey began to the end of 2004. Consistent high levels of service from salvors continue to prevent many spills involving oil and other pollutants.'
Last year the single most utilised form of salvage contract was Lloyd's Form, used in 63 services (some 24% of the total number of assistances). There were also 63 cases utilising other forms of salvage agreement, such as the Japan Form. There were also 19 wreck removal operations, 30 common law salvage claims and 94 services carried out on a lump sum or daily hire basis.
