01 Jun 2005
The 33,933 grt cruise vessel Thomson Celebration (formerly Holland America Line 's Noordam ) enters service this month following a five month refit at A&P Falmouth under the supervision of Columbia Ship Management , Cyprus, who will be acting as ship managers for the vessel on behalf of new owners Thomson Holidays .
The 1984 French built vessel, which has a capacity for 1,350 passengers, arrived in Falmouth last November for works which included changing the livery from HAL to Thomson, a process which involved full UHP water blasting and painting of hull topsides. Damaged port and starboard propeller blades were renewed and both propeller hubs were refurbished. The starboard shaft and sea valve were surveyed and both evaporator plants were removed through the ship's side. Electrical repairs were made to the port shaft alternator. Full load tests were made to lifeboats and lifeboat davits. Various pipework and steel repairs were carried out and vents and ducting were cleaned.
Meanwhile, A&P also assisted owner's contractors in other operations, including accommodation upgrades and conversion of some spaces into additional passenger cabins. Public areas were also upgraded while the galley saw modifications and refurbishment.
A reverse osmosis plant and a new sprinkler system were installed. Modifications were made to the main gearbox shafting to accept a Vulkan-Flenders multi-element coupling in place of Spirrley type couplings.
Craneage, waste disposal and labour back-up was provided by A&P Falmouth throughout the refit period.
Meanwhile, A&P Southampton and Wightlink have signed a revised drydocking and maintenance agreement which extends for a further three years the annual drydocking and refit of the Wightline fleet of passenger/car ferries which began in January 2001. The new agreement has been extended to include A&P Shipcare (Portsmouth) for all in-service repair needs.
