Italian CityCats Running in Rio
01 Mar 2005
Rodriquez Cantieri Navali do Brasil has delivered the first of three 29m CityCat all aluminium catamarans to Barcas SA Shipping Company in Rio De Janeiro.
Zeus 1 will carry up to 230 passengers on the Rio De Janeiro-Charitas commuter route.
The Rodriquez Brasil yard was founded by Italy's Rodriquez Cantieri Navali after a contract was signed with Barcas SA for the construction of 10 aluminium catamarans. The contract required that the vessels be built in Brazil, leading to the yard being established at Niteroi and opened in August 2003.
Of the 10 catamarans under construction, three are of the CityCat 29 design. The other seven are 52m CityCat 52DEs, capable of carrying 900 seated and 300 standing passengers.
The CityCat 29 is powered by two MTU 16V 2000 M70 engines rated at 1,050kW, each driving a fixed pitch propeller to produce a cruising speed of 25 knots. The larger CityCat 52DE will reach 18 knots and features two variable pitch propellers which rotate through 3600 to facilitate rapid berthing and turnaround at the end a commuter run of only two miles.
