Port of Ngqura Taking Shape
01 Mar 2005
Construction of South Africa's newest harbour, Port of Ngqura, at Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape, is progressing according to schedule, with approximately Rand 2 billion already having been spent on infrastructure.
To date, the harbour basin has been flooded and the dredging work required is finished, and construction of a sophisticated sand bypass system is underway. The two breakwaters are nearing completion.
Nearly 24,000 armoured units have been placed to keep the sea at bay, and at the western breakwater the huge caissons that will form the end of the construction are being put in place. Approximately 200m of the eastern breakwater remain to be completed before caissons were floated out and its end capped.
The harbour will be ready to receive ships by the end of this year.
