London Extends Thames Wharf Protection

The Mayor of London has addressed the contentious issue of River Thames wharves disappearing to property development in a new report which endorses not only a continuation of the existing 'safeguarding' policy but extends it to safeguard 25 wharves east of the Thames Barrier for the first time.
The Mayor of Londons new report recommends the safeguarding of more River Thames wharves for commercial marine use.

The report recommends 25 wharves west of the Thames Barrier should remain safeguarded, while three wharves west of the Barrier should be released from safeguarding and 19 wharves east of the Barrier are denied protection.

The Port of London Authority (PLA) has welcomed the clear recommendations set out in the report and agrees that it will help to further strengthen the role of the Thames for the movement of freight.

The PLA also supported the report's 'reactivation strategy' to bring three currently unused wharves back into service.

These are Hurlingham Wharf in Hammersmith & Fulham, Orchard Wharf in Tower Hamlets, and Peruvian Wharf in Newham.

PLA chief executive Richard Everitt said, 'This report recognises the importance of the Thames as an environmentally friendly thoroughfare into the capital. The recommendation to safeguard wharves east of the Thames Barrier is also excellent news. It ensures the Port of London's key position as the natural gateway to the major markets of London and the South East.'
