Despite its modest weight the precious cargo for owners NYK of Japan completely filled the dock of its transport vessel. The zeppelin was transported in airborne condition and strapped down to prevent it from moving. The German built aircraft was filled with uninflammable helium throughout the voyage.
The NYK zeppelin will be part of a large initiative of the Japanese government to attract more tourists to the country. The ‘Yokoso Japan’ (‘Welcome to Japan’) zeppelin will be an important ingredient of the recently started ‘Visit Japan Campaign’.
For Dockwise the featherweight load was a welcome change of pace, coming as it did only months after the company set a record transporting the world’s largest and heaviest cargo. In September, Dockwise transported the 60,000 ton floating production platform Thunder Horse on a 60 day voyage from Korea to the USA.
