North Sea Winches Pull In For Seawork

Specialist marine winch manufacturers North Sea Winches return for Seawork 2005 next month, where they will be found on Stand 104. The company has just completed its biggest ever winch, a hydraulic anchor handler supplied to Hepworth Shipyard for use on their 25.5m tug for Holyhead Towing , MTV Afon Braint (see Tugs & Towing this issue).

The model GMP-1700 double-drum hydraulic winch has a 45 ton pull and capacity per drum for 700m of 44 mm diameter rope. The drums are arranged in parallel waterfall configuration and each has hydraulic ram spooling gear and dual cylinder operated brakes with a holding load of 90 tons per drum. Operation is by remote control from the wheelhouse control panel.

North Sea Winches supplied the complete deck machinery package for this project, which included a 10 ton lugger winch, double gypsy Lloyds classified anchor windlass for 24 mm chain and a two ton rope storage reel.

Technical director David McLorinan, who will be on the North Sea Winches stand at Seawork , designed the hydraulic and control systems also supplied by the company. Commissioning and sea trials of the vessel took place last month before being handed over to join Holyhead Towing's expanding fleet.

Hepworths Shipyard has an order to build a nearly identical vessel for the same customer, for which North Sea Winches will again design and supply the deck machinery and hydraulics package.
