MOBi-lert to Raise the Alarm at Seawork

The prestigious Safety at Sea Award at the 17th Seatrade Awards Ceremony Dinner in London last month went to the MOBi-lert Recovery System, an active crew monitoring system dedicated to preventing the loss of life at sea.

It continuously monitors the presence of individuals on board a vessel via a network of rechargeable pendants.

Designed to enable an instant alert to facilitate a rapid rescue in an MOB emergency, the MOBi-lert system features a rechargeable and waterproof personal transmitter (PTX) worn by every person on board. The instant that a crew member or passenger is in the water, the constant link is broken between any PTX and a receiving console. An automatic alarm is sounded and the MOB’s position is logged, with the MOBi-lert console immediately providing a graphic track-back screen to guide the boat back to where the person was lost.

Utilising NMEA data output, MOBi-lert can be interfaced with other electronic devices like on board management systems or chart plotters. Functions include the triggering of a second alarm in the cabin or other location, Dan buoy release, self steering trip, engine cut out, head to wind command to autopilot, and EPIRB release. MOB data can also be transmitted through GMDSS or DSC via the vessel’s radio equipment.

MOBi-lert was designed and is manufactured in Western Australia by Mobilarm Ltd. Southampton based Ocean Safety Ltd was recently appointed as exclusive UK distributor for MOBi-lert and will be displaying the system next month at Seawork 2005 International. Speaking about the product, Ocean Safety’s managing director Charlie Mill said, ‘The system is simple, cost effective and straightforward to install. The capability of the MOBi-lert to eliminate the sometimes lengthy period between a crew member going overboard and the alarm being raised should make it an essential piece of equipment for any vessel at sea.’
