  • Quantum Series Leaps Off at Europort

    Cummins Marine introduced the first in a new line of Quantum Series marine engines at the Europort Rotterdam exhibition earlier this month. 

  • Type Approval for Engine Lube Metal Detector

    The AMOT MPD metal detector, which prevents engine failure by spotting metal particles in lubricating fluids due to bearing wear or other problems, has received a DNV Type Approval certificate. It covers application Class B for operating temperatures from 5 to 700C and up to 100% humidity, with 'on-engine' vibration and IP44 enclosure. 

  • Emissions Compliant Engines Launched

    A new generation of Perkins Sabre on board gensets is being unveiled at the METS exhibition in Amsterdam this month. Fully compliant with all current and proposed emissions legislation, the Perkins Sabre 4.4GM, 4.4TGM, 4.4TWGM and 4.4TW2GM models have net engine power outputs spanning from 42.7kWm to 106.8kWm. 

  • Propulsion Package for Chilean Coast Guard

    Wartsila Corporation has won a contract to deliver complete propulsion systems for two 80m offshore patrol vessels for the Chilean Coast Guard. 

  • Direct Hydraulic Drives for Propulsion?

    New ideas made possible through progress and product development are worth thinking about and the new CBP motors from Hagglunds open up some interesting ideas in marine propulsion. Hagglunds Drives have been manufacturing hydraulic motors since the 60s originally for cranes but since the 80s on heavy duty continuous industrial drives and now the latest development is a high power drive unit available in several sizes that will give power up to 1MW from a single motor. 

  • Giant Trimaran Flies in the Canaries

    Canary Islands ferry operator Fred Olsen SA has added a 126.7m LOA aluminium trimaran ferry to extend its services on routes linking Los Cristianos on Tenerife, San Sebastian on Gomera, and Palma Island. Benchijigua Express is a fast and comfortable ferry capable of transporting up to 1,350 passengers and with a vehicle deck that will carry 350 cars or 450 lane/metres of trucks and 123 cars. 

  • Newage Launches New MPC at METS

    The PRM Marine Propulsion Control (MPC) unit , an all new system providing full electronic control over engine throttle and gear engagement, was launched by Newage Transmissions at the METS exhibition in Amsterdam this month. 

  • Fast Pilot Boat Exceeds Design Speed

    A twin UltraJet 451 propulsion system propels a new 74ft aluminium pilot boat built by Horizon Shipbuilding of Alabama USA. The vessel is scheduled for service at the Port of Umm Qasr in Iraq. 

  • Voith Gets AIRborne at Europort

    Heidenheim, Germany based Voith Turbo Marine announced a commercial cooperation agreement at Europort Maritime that will see it expand its portfolio in the strategically important market for marine propulsion systems made from CFK. The agreement is with AIR Fertigung-Technologie GmbH & Co KG, which was founded in 1993 by employees of Rostock University and has since presented significant developments in propeller technology for both ship propulsion systems and wind power turbines.

  • Hydro 06 Antwerp Issues Call for Papers

    The International Federation of Hydrographic Societies, representing organisations in Australasia, Benelux, Denmark, South Africa and the UK, is to hold its 15th biennial international hydrographic symposium in Antwerp from 6-9 November 2006. Organised by The Hydrographic Society Benelux, and supported by a major exhibition of equipment and services, it will deal with a wide range of contemporary issues under the theme Evolutions in Hydrography. 

  • New Innomar Sub-Bottom Profiler

    Rostock, Germany based Innomar Technologie has extended its SES-2000 series of parametric sub-bottom profiling systems for open sea and shallow water applications with introduction of a fan-type model incorporating three common parametric transducers and associated transceiver electronics. 

  • IMCA Digital Video Review

    A detailed review of methods now being increasingly adopted for digital encoding and recording of video data for offshore survey applications has been published by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), which has nearly 300 members in 35 countries representing leading offshore, marine and underwater engineering companies.

    The Port Authority of Jamaica has awarded Mott MacDonald, engineering and management consultant, a contract to help expand cruise terminal facilities at Montego Bay, Jamaica. 

  • Masterplan for Barrow's Port Development Picks Up Speed

    First announced in 2003, the overall Masterplan for developing the port area at Barrow in Cumbria includes 400 waterfront homes, offices, retail units, a 300-berth marina, powerboat racing course, water sports centre and innovation park. Now, work has started on the design of two of the other projects included in the scheme; a new marina link and cruise terminal. 

  • Lock Restoration Will Open Up Ireland's Waterways

  • UK Dredging's New Irish Contract

  • Online Sensors Deliver Root-Cause Monitoring

    Littlehampton UK based Kittiwake, which specialises in fuel and lube oil testing in the marine industries, has launched a new range of remote online sensors for lubricant and machine condition monitoring. The ANALEXrs range are from Analex, which Kittiwake acquired in 2003 to enhance their own range of portable low cost lubricant analysis tools. 

  • Gas Vapour Monitors Satisfy US Coast Guard

    When ships are loaded with liquids such as gasoline, fuel oils or naptha, vapour is displaced from the hold. This vapour can either be recovered or destroyed using an enclosed flare. The composition of the displaced vapour is highly variable and under certain conditions can fall within the flammability limits of the gas. 

  • Analyser NOx Sox Off Emissions

    Set up earlier this year in Gloucestershire UK as a sister company to land based air quality monitoring specialist Enviro Technology Services, ET Marine has had its compact SeaNox nitrogen oxides analyser receive an approval certificate from Det Norske Veritas. 

  • Control Valve Streamlines Marine Diesels

    The new Yanmar ECO Diesel range of low emission marine engines has been developed with an AMOT custom designed self-actuating temperature control valve for the water cooling system.

  • Funding Extension for Sea and Water

    The UK's Minister of State for Transport, Dr Stephen Ladyman MP, has awarded a further three years of funding to Sea and Water, the campaigning organisation charged with promoting the increased movement of freight on inland waterways and coastal and short sea routes. 

  • Oi06 Call for Papers

    A Call for Papers has gone out for Oi06, the next edition of the Oceanology International exhibition and conference, scheduled for 21 - 23 March 2006 at the ExCel exhibition centre in London's Docklands. 

  • Germans Develop Fuel-economy Sail Towing System

    A lot of interest is being show by shipping companies in a new German-developed ship towing propulsion concept called Sky Sails and a former pilot boat is at the hub of experiments into the new system in the Baltic. 

  • New Fisheries Agency Launched

    The British Government has created a new Marine Fisheries Agency to deliver services to the fishing industry and a number of marine environmental interests. 

  • Wartsila's Chinese Gensets

    Construction has started on Wartsila's joint venture genset factory in China. The Wartsila Qiyao Diesel Company Ltd (Shanghai) will initially manufacture Wartsila Auxpac W20 diesel gensets which will be sold through Wartsila's global sales network. The new facility is jointly owned by Wartsila and the Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute, which is a subsidiary of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation. Production is due to begin next summer. 

  • EUR-OCEANS Tracks Climate Change

    The Plymouth UK based National Marine Aquarium is the only tourist attraction in the country selected to participate in a major new climate change project. As a member of the European Network of Excellence project, it will join participants in 25 other European countries to investigate and communicate the effects of climate change to the world. 

  • Navigation System Upgrade for the German Navy

    A contract to equip all German Navy ships with a new suite of navigational systems has been awarded to a group of companies led by ET Marinesysteme GmbH as prime contractor, an equal joint venture between EADS and Thales. Commercial and technical evaluation led to final contract for system supply to start later this year and be completed in 2009. 

  • Spinnaker Tower Opens in Portsmouth

    The long awaited Spinnaker Tower, a 170m high observation tower on the edge of Portsmouth Harbour, UK, opened to the public last month. Soaring above Portsmouth Harbour, the south facing tower is higher than the London Eye or Big Ben and offers visitors sweeping views over the Solent and across a distance of at least 23 miles. 

  • Port Development Promoted

    Politicians from all the main UK political parties were present last month at a meeting organised by Haven Gateway Partnership in the House of Commons to bring them up to date on plans for new container port developments at Bathside Bay and Felixstowe South. The briefing came with a Government decision imminent on the proposed green field container terminal development at Bathside Bay. 

  • Nelson Revisited in Historic City of Portsmouth

    Over 600 children from the Admiral Lord Nelson School in Portsmouth dressed in nautical costumes on 21 of October and took to the waters of the Solent with Wightlink Isle of Wight Ferries to celebrate the famous victory 200 years ago of their school's namesake at the Battle of Trafalgar. 

  • VT/Merwede Sign MoU

    Two major Northern European shipbuilders, the UK's VT Shipbuilding and Merwede Shipyard of the Netherlands, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on naval warship procurement programmes outside the UK. 

  • Ceres Paragon Lifts Off

    Amsterdam's innovative Ceres Paragon container terminal, largely unused since its 2001 opening, has enjoyed a turnaround in its fortunes recently with two Grand Alliance loops now calling to bring an initial 200,000teu per year throughput. This has, in turn, seen the creation of Dutch Feeder Line, a twice weekly operation to Hamburg commencing this month. 

  • 'Land Swap' Lands Port Facilities

    A new quay and slipway facility at Polly Steps, beside the ABP Port of Teignmouth, was opened last month. The quay and slipway have been constructed as part of a 'land swap' arrangement between Teignbridge District Council and ABP. 

  • BMT Pays Respect to a Founding Father

    David Goodrich, chairman of BMT Ltd and a former President of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) died last month at the age of 64. 

  • Merger to Create Peterhead Port Authority

    The separate organisations that currently control Peterhead's two harbours are to undergo a historic merger that will bring major economic benefits to the town. 

  • Trinity House RIV Launched in Poland

    The new Trinity House Rapid Intervention Vessel (RIV) Alert was launched last month at Stocznia Remontowa SA shipbuilders in Gdansk, Poland, marking the first stage of a £38m investment on three new vessels by the General Lighthouse Authorities (GLAs) of the UK and Ireland. 

  • Marine Electronics Online

    Having observed evident changes in the way products will be sold in the near future, Marine Electronic Services (MES) has established a new company, Raydirect, specialising in Raymarine products online. This is now live at www. raydirect. co. uk and follows six months of internal web development to produce a completely e-enabled business. With the entire back office (order processing, accounting, and shipping) interconnected, Raydirect exists in an automated warehouse environment integrated with the UPS shipping network. 

  • Cosalt's Italian High Wire

    Cosalt Safety & Protection has been appointed sole distributor in the UK and Ireland for Italian steel wire rope manufacturer Redaelli Tecna Cordati. In the marine environment this includes hoist and winch wires for dockside cranes and wires used in dredging and piling applications.

  • Pollution Punished in Port of Southampton

    Southampton UK magistrates recently upheld a summons issued by Associated British Ports (ABP) against the owners of MV Autofreighter, who admitted polluting the waters of the harbour earlier this year. 

  • 'V' Boom's Victorious Pollution Trial

    Cornwall County Council's Emergency Planning staff were called into action last month to respond, for exercise purposes, to a major oil pollution incident. A full emergency team was assembled in the incident centre in Falmouth docks and specialist companies Triskel Marine Ltd (TML) and Transas were drafted in to advise on prioritising the deployment of the available resources. TML was also tasked with designing and overseeing the deployment of their new concept of V shaped oil trap.

    Sadly we must report the untimely death of Mr Alan C Bennett, well known tug owner and waterman in the Thames and Medway area. Founder of Alan C Bennett & Sons, he built up a substantial business in the transportation of stone, excavated spoil and other cargoes in the face of a general decline in the lighterage industry. 

  • 'Morgan Foss', A Powerful New Compact Tug

    Foss Maritime of the USA has taken delivery of the powerful new harbour tug Morgan Foss for service in Pacific Coast ports. Yet another example of the growing popularity of 'compact tugs', this highpowered vessel is the result of a unique collaboration between Foss and the Canadian based designer Robert Allan Ltd. 

  • Four New RT-60 Rotor Tugs are Sold

    Kooren Shipbuilding and Trading BV have announced that the first two of their new RT-60 class 'Rotor Tugs' have now been delivered and a further pair are nearing completion. It has also been revealed that all four have been sold to the new French tug fleet of Societe Nouvelle de Remorquage du Havre (SNRH) under a long term lease-purchase contract. The new fleet is due to commence harbour towage activities in Le Havre on 1 January 2006.

  • Divers Deliver for Scheduled Repairs

    Antwerp based Hydrex was called out to Mexico to prepare the loading of a large accommodation platform on to a heavy lift carrier vessel. 

  • WiWa Pumps' Eurospray Expansion

    The UK based Eurospray Group are working hard to popularise the products of WiWa, principal suppliers of pumps to the US Navy, to a European audience. 

  • Diesel-Electric Power for Heavy Lift Conversions

    Two semi-submersible barges are being converted into self propelled heavy lift transport vessels for Fairmount Heavy Transport NV, an associated company of Rotterdam based towage contractor Fairmount Marine BV. When the conversions are completed in the second half of 2006, the Fairmount Fjord and Fairmount Fjell will be primarily employed in the transport of offshore equipment such as jack-up and semi-submersible drilling rigs. The cargo will be loaded and unloaded with the vessels ballasted down to a semi-submerged condition and floated off the vessels' large cargo decks. 

  • German Yards Attract Inland Conversion

    Two inland motor ships have been lengthened this Autumn at the J Braun Schiffswerft at Speyer on the Rhine as the demand for revamped waterway tonnage continues to attract shipping customers to smaller inland shipyards.
