Diesel Power & Propulsion

Volvo Penta's Europort Double

Volvo Penta launched two major new products into the commercial marine market at the Europort Rotterdam exhibition earlier this month.

The company's new D16 marine diesel bristles with advanced electronics to deliver high torque and more power than its predecessor whilst also complying with emission regulations for IMO, EPA 2, River Rhine level 2 and DNV's Clean Design.

The D16 is available in two propulsion versions and two genset versions. All four models are in-line 16 litre six cylinder engines with turbocharger and electronically controlled injector units. The D16-650MH propulsion engine delivers 650hp (478kW) at 1,800rpm while its rating 2, D16-750MH sibling produces 750hp (551kW) at 1,900rpm, which is over 150hp more thanits predecessor. Installation dimension and weight remain equivalent.

The D16MG genset engine produces 450kW at 1,500rpm in one version and 500kW at 1,800 rpm in another. Contributing to the high torque is a centrally mounted twin entry turbo that facilitates pulse charging, with the power of each exhaust pulse used to produce turbo pressure, generating 50% to 90% more torque than its predecessor. A new charge-air cooling system also boosts torque whilst contributing to lower emissions.

Europort Maritime also saw Volvo Penta unveil a commercial workboat application of the IPS system launched into the leisure marine market at the London Boat Show in January.

Some 90 leisure boat builders are already producing hulls to accommodate IPS, with a particularly rapid uptake in the USA, where the magazine Popular Science has just recognised the system as one of the ‘Top100 Innovations of the Year’. IPS is a totally integrated twin engine propulsion package with each 310hp IPS400 engine powering a steerable propulsion unit on the underside of the boat which features twin forward facing propellers. The propellers thus work in completely undisturbed water, the Duoprop technology balancing out lateral forces whilst the prop wash is parallel with the boat’s underside.

Exhaust fumes are emitted through the propulsion unit into the prop wash to largely eliminate smell, smoke and noise on board. The system promises enhanced performance, comfort, manoeuvrability and fuel economy compared with traditional shaft installations. The in-line six cylinder IPS400 engine displaces 5.5 litres and is essentially a Volvo Penta D6 that has been adapted to the demands of the IPS system. It is turbocharged and after cooled and complies with IMO and EPA 2 regulations.
