BMT Pays Respect to a Founding Father

David Goodrich, chairman of BMT Ltd and a former President of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) died last month at the age of 64.

One of the most distinguished naval architects of his generation, Goodrich will be remembered as the guiding light behind the formation of BMT in 1985, formed from the merger of the British Ship Research Association (BSRA), of which he was managing director, and the privatised National Maritime Institute.

As BMT’s first managing director, Goodrich determined  that the company would be held in beneficial ownership for its staff through an employee benefit trust. He believed this was essential for a company whose principal asset was the collective intellect of its employees. David Goodrich served on many industry bodies and was an enthusiastic advocate for his profession and maritime technology.

From 1999 to 2002 he was President of RINA, having previously served on its Council. Goodrich lobbied hard  for the establishment of a Marine Foresight Panel to recognise the contribution of the marine industry to the UK economy and later became its first chairman.
