The outstanding range of joint facilities available to the new Port Authority will immediately benefit existing users of both harbours, but the new organisation will be more than the sum of its parts. For the first time, Peterhead’s harbour will be marketed with a common identity, offering 24/7 facilities and services more effectively than was previously possible. Existing and potential customers will now have access to both all weather and deep water berths.

Peterhead's fishing industry will benefit from a range of planned port developments and new services. The oil sector will benefit from access to all weather berthing and enhanced flexibility. The new Port Authority will embark on a series of projects to attract new activities to Peterhead, such as short sea shipping, containerisation, offshore decommissioning, and marine renewable energy projects.

Confirmation of the merger comes at a time when the two separate harbour organisations are enjoying a good year. It has been a bumper fishing season for Peterhead Harbour Trust, and Peterhead Bay Authority has experienced its busiest period for hosting large dive support vessels since 1995. A strong supporter of the merger, Banff and Buchan MP Alex Salmond said, 'This merger will result in fully integrated services for port users and will give the new authority the operational flexibility to develop the exciting range of facilities and enhanced delivery that will attract new business and serve existing clients through the 21st century.’
