Royal Opening for Trinity House
01 Oct 2005
The new office complex for Trinity House , the General Lighthouse Authority for England, Wales, The Channel Islands and Gibraltar, was opened during the summer by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, Master of Trinity House.
The new office building, designed by Milsom Architects, has a nautical theme, with the building's profile representing a vessel. The front elevation uses granite cladding, a stone associated with the construction of the great offshore lighthouses.
The architects worked closely with planners and conservationists to ensure that the building integrated with the existing and historic buildings of Harwich Town. Peter Melson, director of operations and asset management, has also been heavily involved with the regeneration of the Harwich waterfront.
Ipswich based Jackson Construction Ltd successfully tendered for the contract to build both the offices and a new buoy maintenance building which is still under construction. Work began in May of 2004 and the buoy maintenance building is due to be completed next month.
In addition to office space and meeting rooms, the new building provides a modern control and monitoring centre for the Lighthouse Service, monitoring all aids to navigation.
The buoy maintenance building also represents the theme of Trinity House and the sea.
It will house grit blasting, paint spraying and fabrication workshops required to maintain navigation buoys and other structures as well as test facilities and laboratories for research and development.
Its location adjacent to Gas House Creek and architectural features such as a curved silver roof, cream cladding, and a lattice circular structure at its south end will form a focal point for motorists arriving at Harwich from along the A120.
