'Matador 3' Lifts First Offshore Substation

The UK's first offshore substation has been successfully installed at the Barrow Offshore Wind Farm in the Irish Sea. The substation transforms the power generated by the windfarm before it can be exported to the national grid and marks a crucial stage in the development of the 30 turbine facility, which is expected to provide power for some 65,000 homes.

The wind farm is a joint initiative between Centrica, the UK energy company, and Danish firm Dansk Olie og Naturgas (DONG).

Facilities at the ABP Port of Barrow's Ramsden Dock were used when the substation was fitted out by a 20 strong team from Agrilek, a Barrow based multi-disciplinary engineering company.

Middlesbrough UK based MPI Ltd is responsible for installing the offshore turbines, using their purpose built wind farm installation vessel Resolution . MPI contracted Rotterdam based heavy lifting specialists Bonn & Mees to install the 460 ton substation onto its waiting monopole. Bonn & Mees deployed their newest and largest floating sheerlegs Matador 3 , which has a maximum lifting capacity in its fly-jib of 600 tons and 1,500 tons in the main frame.

The massive 70m by 32m sheerlegs was mobilised from Rotterdam to the Port of Barrow quayside. The Van der Wees pontoon Lastdrager was also mobilised, under tow from the Van Wijngaarden tug Amstelstrrom .Matador 3 loaded the substation onto Lastdrager and was then towed by the tug Broedertrouw 16 to its position at sea, where Amstelstrrom assisted in positioning its anchors.

Matador 3 then lifted the substation from the deck of Lastdrager andonto the monopole.

Matador 3 returned directly to Rotterdam for other lifting project. It was soon contracted by SvitzerWijsmuller to assist in the salvage of the 90m freighter MSMichelle , which had sunk off Den Helder following a collision with another ship.
