01 Oct 2005
The British Royal Fleet Auxiliary's Fast Fleet Tanker Gold Rover iscurrently undergoing a 117 day at A&P Tyne 's Hebburn yard.
Gold Rover was built on the Tyne by Swan Hunter in 1974 and has returned there for earlier refits. This refit will peak with over 200 men per day working on the ship, a contract which will help to secure employment for A&P Tyne's core workforce well into October.
The scope of works for Gold Rover includes full blasting and painting of the hull, weather decks and superstructure; major engineering work to the main engines and auxiliaries; routine survey and repair work throughout the vessel; and extensive refurbishment of the accommodation on the vessel as part of an ongoing investment to extend its active life.
The RFA Gold Rover is one of three remaining Fast Fleet tankers in the flotilla. The 11,522 ton displacement ship carries dry stores, diesel fuel, aviation fuel and other equipment to Royal Navy frigates during exercises and operations.
It's presence at A&P Tyne's Hebburn yard follows immediately on from a successful 80 day refit of the RFA support vessel Oaklea f.RFA Commodore Mike Norfolk, who accepted the vessel back into the operational fleet said, 'We are delighted to accept this strategically important vessel back into the fleet from A&P Tyne. All the work has been completed to a high standard and the vessel redelivered both on the contractual delivery date and within the original budget.'
