Dutch Shiprepair Cooperation

IMCA Group, the parent company of Amsterdam Ship Repair, has announced its decision to decline from all industrial activities and to<$>concentrate instead on real estate development. However, the present managers of the yard have confirmed that business will continue as usual under the old name of Shipdock, with which many Dutch and international owners and ship managers are familiar.

It is expected that the ‘new’ Shipdock will start a cooperation agreement with the Volharding Shipyards repair yard. The core activity of Volharding Shipyards is newbuilding at facilities in Foxhol, Westerbroek, Eemshaven, Harlingen and Izmit in Turkey. Volharding’s modern repair facility in Harlingen is equipped with a Syncrolift which is ideally suited for small and medium sized vessels.

Ships can be repaired on the platform or in the adjacent covered workshops. ‘This cooperation creates a new strong company, dedicated to ship repair, maintenance and conversion,’ said Geert-Jan Bodewes of Volharding Shipyards. ‘Both yards are complementary, there is economy of scale and synergy, both in organisation, costs and facilities.’

Cooperation will be finalised over the coming months. It is expected that the total number of ships to be repaired at Amsterdam and Harlingen will increase slightly. Productivity, labour flexibility, cost control and fast response-time will be key factors in surviving in the fiercely competitive North West European ship repair market.
