Mudflats Investigation Brings Relief
01 Sep 2005
Kent County Council in the UK are proposing to build a road bridge across the mudflats of Milton Creek, a tidal waterway to the north of Sittingbourne that connects the town to the Swale and Thames Estuary. The bridge will carry the Sittingbourne Northern Relief Road at a point where the creek is approximately 100m wide and has a tidal range of 0m to 4m.
Babtie Jacobs, on behalf of KCC, commissioned Fugro Engineering Services (FES) to carry out a site investigation in the creek to obtain geotechnical data required for the design of the bridge foundations.
FES constructed two boreholes to a depth of 50m from the jack-up platform Coastal Explorer using light cable percussion boring techniques. Disturbed samples were recovered at regular intervals including each change in soil type. In the cohesive soils U100 samples were taken and sealed to retain the moisture content. On occasions in the underlying hard strata, chiselling was employed to advance the boreholes to the required 50m depth.
Standard penetration tests were carried out on the granular soils and weaker chalk. On completion, the boreholes were backfilled with cement bentonite grout.
