ITC Acquire 'Tempest' and 'Typhoon'

International Towage Contractors (ITC) of the Netherlands has successfully completed negotiations leading to the purchase of the identical ocean going anchor handling tugs Smitwijs Typhoon and Smitwijs Tempest .

The transaction was been completed through the services of London based Offshore Shipbrokers Ltd and the tugs will be added to the ITC fleet during September/November 2005 in Singapore or Hong Kong.

At the time of writing new names for the vessels had not been announced.

These vessels, built originally for Wijsmuller to a Wijsmuller Engineering design in 1976, are well known in the towage and offshore markets. During their working lives, both vessels have mainly been employed in round the clock anchor handling and towing assistance to some of the largest offshore pipelay barges.

Both units are currently under charter to the US contractor McDermott and operating in the Far East.

The tugs are well suited to the type of long haul towage operations with which ITC is associated, thanks to a bunker capacity of close to 1,000m 3, giving a 45 day range while towing at full power. Two Stork-Werkspoor 6TM410 main engines deliver a total of 9,350bhp and drive two controllable pitch propellers in Kort nozzles for a maximum bollard pull of 120 tons.

A double drum towing and anchor handing winch can accommodate two 1,200m towlines of 64mm diameter steel wire rope in towing configuration. Both vessels carry an extensive range of salvage gear and Tempest meets the fire fighting requirement for FiFi2 with two water/foam monitors installed on top of the wheelhouse.

These additions brings the fleet owned and managed by ITC to ten units, and indicates the company's confidence in the ocean towage and offshore markets and reconfirms their dedication to maintain its position as one of the largest and best known ocean towage companies operating on a global basis.
