Light Workboat Jet Drive Debut

Cummins MerCruiser Diesel has launched its 120hp (88kW) 1.7 MJ 120 diesel engine with an integrated jet drive, the first in a series of diesel engine with jet drive packages from the company which will go up to 250hp (184kW) and will be for both recreational and light commercial use.

The new jet has a high volume 250mm axial flow pump, providing more thrust and better load carrying capacity than jets with smaller impellers.

A flow of up to 450 litres per second makes the boat perform similar to those with sterndrive installations, but allowing shallow water running, which sterndrives cannot match.

Design engineers have achieved space savings of 600mm by integrating the gearbox with the jet's housing.

As a result, no jack shaft is necessary. The diesel engine is standard, making installation straightforward and cost efficient.

Single lever remote control operates throttle and shift. A hydraulic reverse bucket provides for easy handling and emergency stops. There is an easy-open inspection hatch on top of the drive, outside the boat. The package features a power take-off (PTO) system behind the gearbox, with mounting holes for pump brackets, port and starboard.
