'Razorbill' Flies After Repower
01 Apr 2006
An 8.5m fibreglass fishing boat operated out of Ramsgate UK by full-time fisherman Trevor Lamb has been repowered with a Perkins Sabre M215C diesel engine coupled to a PRM 750 gearbox. The boat was getting too slow with its old engine but following the repower, Razorbill now has a top speed of 10 knots.
The six cylinder, six litre turbocharged and intercooled M215C develops its maximum 215hp at a low stress 2,500rpm.
This, when combined with the engine's turbocharger wastegate system that reduces maximum cylinder pressure, ensures long term reliability.
The engine also incorporates high capacity heat exchange equipment with cupro-nickel tube stacks that ensure low component operating temperatures. The M215C also features gear driven engine and raw water pumps, with high quality silicone hoses.
Named after the razorbill bird common to the Ramsgate area, the vessel was fiited with an M215C supplied by Cannock based Perkins Sabre distributor Finning (UK).
Trevor Lamb was looking for a low maintenance, low running costs, low emissions engine.
He had other reasons, as he explained, 'A friend of mine has used an M215C for some time now and has never had any problems. It was also a perfect fit for the boat, meaning very little alteration needed to be done in order for it to be installed.'
