Irving Complete Two More Tugs for Nordane
01 Apr 2006
Irving Shipbuilding Inc of Halifax, Nova Scotia, are in the process of completing the second azimuthing stern drive (ASD) tug for Nordane Shipping of Svenborg in Denmark.
The first of the pair, Stevns Iceflower, was delivered earlier in the year and sister ship, Stevns Icecap, is due for completion next month. Built to operate in heavy ice and comply with the stringent requirements of Ice Class 1A, Stevns Iceflower was the second of a new variant of Irving's well-known 5,000hp ASD design (MJ - January 2006). This tug is now in the hands of her owners under the Danish flag and is being offered for charter on the 'spot market' in Europe.
Stenvs Iceflower and sister Stenvs Icecap are vessels of 30.8m in length with a beam of 11.14m and maximum draft of 5.5m.
Each has a large 'escort skeg' forward to enhance performance while operating in the indirect towing mode and improve course stability while going astern. To prevent damage when working in ice, two 'ice-diverters' are fitted beneath the stern to stop large pieces of ice reaching the ASD units. A small 'ice stop' is also welded to the forward lower edge of the skeg to prevent the hull riding up onto the ice.
The tugs are propelled by two Caterpillar 3516B HD main engines, each generating 2,500bhp at 1,600rpm and coupled Rolls-Royce Aquamaster US255 propulsion units. This propulsion system gives the vessels a bollard pull of 60.4 tons towing ahead, 56.9 tons astern and a speed of 14 knots. To offer increased flexibility to charterers a Kamewa 45TV bow thruster of 150kW is also fitted. Electrical power is generated onboard the vessels by two Caterpillar C9 diesel driven alternators rated at 165kW.
A comprehensive outfit of towing gear is installed, including two electrically powered Ridderinkhof towing winches.
Located on the raised foredeck is a single drum towing winch . .
. . with a 150 ton brake load, equipped with heavy duty spooling gear and accommodating 122m of 89mm Spectra fibre towline. For towing and anchor handling over the stern is a similar frequency controlled aft winch fitted with 762m of 51mm diameter steel wire towline.
Also provided is a set of 200mm tow pins and line handling gear, a stern roller, a Ridderinkhof capstan/ tugger winch and a 75 ton Washinton Chain tow hook.
Both tugs are equipped for fire-fighting to FiFi 1 standards with two remotely controlled water/ foam monitors, each with a delivery rate of 1,200m 3/hr of water supplied by a pump on one main engine.
Stevns Iceflower and Stevns Icecap join two larger Ice Class ASD tugs, Stevns Ocean and Stevns Arctic, recently built in Canada for Nordane Shipping. The latter have both been marketed successfully on the 'spot market' and carried out a wide range of towage operations.
