Eco Dredging has recently undertaken maintenance dredging works at a temporary landing stage in the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer while repair and maintenance works were underway at the normal landing stage for a high speed ferry service between France and the UK.

Eco Dredging contracted to dredge underneath the floating part of the landing stage and the jetty itself. The floater ensures the jetty stays at a fixed level above the waterline at all times so cars and passengers can get onto or off the ferry safely.

The bottom of the floater is about 5.5m under the waterline and was touching a silt bank at low tides. The volume to be dredged was only 6,000m 3but both floater and jetty had to remain in place during operations.

A tidal variation of 8.5m resulted in the requirement for a 21m long dredging ladder that was longer unusual. This in turn required very long 14m spud poles and a skilled operator to maintain dredger stability and position the cutter accurately in the X, Y and Z coordinates.
