Gardline Continues Survey Fleet Expansion
01 Aug 2006
Great Yarmouth UK based Gardline Shipping continues its acquisitive fleet expansion programme with the successful purchase of RRS Charles Darwin. The 69m LOA vessel, renamed RV Ocean Researcher, follows RV Triton and MV Confidante as the third ship purchased by Gardline in the past 18 months. It was delivered in June following a preparatory period in dry dock.
A full high specification analogue geophysical and digital seismic package has been installed, and the vessel is booked first by Gardline clients Floyd and Associates Ltd before moving on to a programme for Shell Exploration and Production in Europe. The scope of works will initially involve hazard site survey operations and will be managed by Gardline's geophysical specialist survey company Gardline Geosurvey.
Phil Edwards, Gardline Geosurvey marketing manager said, 'This acquisition is seen as a positive commitment to reinforce Gardline's position in the marine survey market.
The Ocean Researcher ideally matches the company's future core business needs and underlines Gardline's further commitment to our clients.'
In its previous life as RRS Charles Darwin the vessel carried out extensive marine research during 180 cruises whilst operated by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The ship's diesel-electric propulsion system has a reduced acoustic signature and 260m of scientific deck space. There is extensive accommodation for 39 people.
Capable of 40 days at sea, the vessel is proven as a flexible, stable and safe work platform in a wide variety of environments.
It is expected to adapt well to Gardline's integrated geophysical, geotechnical and environmental surveys.
