Ports Academy Anticipates Expansion
01 Aug 2006
Proposals to set up a Ports & Logistics Skills Academy within the UK's Haven Gateway have taken an important step forward, with work starting on a detailed business plan for the project. The Haven Gateway Partnership has commissioned a consortium of three companies to develop a business plan for the Academy, to be delivered next month.
The project will be managed by Ignite Consulting as lead partner in a consortium which also includes Akenham and Poulsen Selleck. The consortium will look at a full business plan, identifying funding strings and potential locations for the Academy, and working with employers to discuss how this can be delivered.
Education, skills and training comprise a key priority for the Haven Gateway Partnership.
The Haven Gateway's massive ports, shipping and logistics sector is critical to the sub-region's economy and the Partnership is committed to ensuring that the correct skills and training are available as the sector gets ready for substantial expansion through projects such as the Felixstowe South and Bathside Bay deepwater container terminal developments.
'We have identified that there is a skills need which is common in the port related sector around the UK and we must tackle that, said Haven Gateway project manager Richard Morton.
'There is a willingness from employers to tell us exactly what they want and discuss what will be delivered and we are also talking to training providers.'
As well as looking at location, costing, funding and employer's needs, the business plan ill consider issues such as branding and marketing, Academy membership, communication and project management.
