Emden Maintains SWATH Momentum with German Customs Boats
01 Dec 2006
The 49m LOA boats will be built according to the SWATH-principle. SWATH stands for "Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull" and signifies a twin hull vessel with a very small displacement area on the waterline. Owing to this small waterline area, the ship is hardly affected by seaway. As a result, vessels built in SWATH technology have an extremely good sea keeping behaviour even in heavy seas.
The German Federal Customs Administration has chosen this vessel in order to ensure an optimum realisation of its sovereign tasks, together with other authorities.
For the Emden yard this commission means the consistent continuation of the SWATH family, begun with the SWATH-research vessel ‘Planet’. The new project now takes advantage of all the experiences gained the earlier ship.
The 1,000 ton displacement boats will be built according to German Lloyd regulations and will feature diesel-electric propulsion.
