Princess Supports Seafarers' Centre

HRH The Princess Royal visited the Southampton Seafarer’s Centre recently to attend the annual meeting of volunteers and supporters.

The Princess was introduced to over 70 volunteers and supporters, seafarers, representatives of the Port of Southampton, shipping companies and other organisations that contribute financially to the Centre. She took the time to individually speak to them all about their support and connection to the Centre and its work in the Port.

The Princess Royal also unveiled a plaque to commemorate her visit, commenting that Southampton was a model for future collaboration of the organisations in establishing other centres in the UK. She also received a cheque for £5,000 on behalf of the Centre from The Southampton Shipowners’ Association as part of its significant charitable contribution to the facility.

The Centre is an ecumenical partnership between the Apostleship of the Sea, the British & International Sailors’ Society, and the Mission to Seafarers. It is established as a separate charity called Centres for Seafarers.

The Centre is a busy focus for visiting seafarers of all nationalities, with some 1,400 sailors using its facilities each month. The refurbished Centre was opened last year in the former Mission to Seafarers building in Queens Terrace.
