Aker Yards has signed a contract with Stena Rederi AB of Sweden to deliver two innovative super ferries in the first and third quarters of 2010. The €400m contract includes options for two further vessels and demonstrates Aker’s ability to operate effectively across borders, with the basic design of the vessels to be undertaken in Finland and the build in Germany.

The 62,000 gross ton ships will be 240m long and 32m wide with 5,500m of trailer lanes, 700m for cars and a passenger capacity of 1,200. each vessel will be powered by four 8,000 kW output four stroke diesels to deliver a service speed of 22 knots.

Although Aker’s traditional ferry building yards in Finland and France were fully booked for the delivery dates requested by the client, the group was able to call upon its German yard, which has built passenger ships and ro-ro ferries, to undertake this contract.

The vessels are scheduled for delivery in the first and third quarter of 2010.
