Boskalis CEO Describes 'Unique' Dredging Market

Robert van Gelder, CEO of Netherlands based international dredging contractor Royal Boskalis Westminster, says 2005, and particularly the second half of 2005, was a remarkable year for the sheer volume of work that came to the marketplace. He added that looking ahead to 2006 and beyond, there has never been such a large volume of work on the horizon in all of his 20 years with the company.

In his annual New Year's speech last month van Gelder gave a particularly upbeat and optimistic assessment of the international dredging market, noting that the Boskalis order book nearly doubled in 2005 and that he expected an increase in turnover and higher fleet utilisation levels in 2006. In fact, the Boskalis orderbook now stands at what he described as a record high and is likely to be driven higher still by the large number of projects believed to be about to come to market.

Whereas in the past the dredging market had been driven by a single factor or combination of factors, such as demand for land reclamation projects or the need for new port infrastructure, now a number of factors are at work, including the above mentioned, plus a high level of demand for dredging work for offshore projects, dredging related work for new LNG projects, dredging for industrial developments, and the very large number of huge tourism related projects such as the Palm Islands and The World off Dubai.

He also noted that another important feature of the 'new' dredging market is that, whereas in the past the demand for most types of project was relatively short-term, the range and type of projects now coming up for bidding have much longer timeframes, thus providing companies such as Boskalis with what they hope will be a stable long term outlook.
