The first phase of the River Clyde Boatyard at Rothesay Dock East in Clydebank opened for business recently.

The largest boat hoist in Scotland is a key feature of the new commercial boatyard.

Not only is it the only specialised small boatyard on the upper Clyde but it also boasts the largest boat hoist in Scotland, a 75 ton capacity model.

Clydeport is operated by Peel Ports, a group which also includes the Manchester Ship Canal and Mersey Docks & Harbours. The 10 acre boatyard is being built on the finger pier at Rothesay Dock East, Current commercial and industrial uses will be retained within Rothesay Dock, with further commercial facilities also planned, bringing the whole area into regular commercial use.

Development work on the boat yard will continue for three to five years, with two phases to be added to the one now completed. The first phase includes security and lighting, fencing, the boat hoist, and construction of the first workshop.

Other facilities, including a new modern slipway capable of handling 45 ton boats, additional workshops and sheds, and the installation of pontoons, will be built to meet demand. The new facility is well placed for both local and national transport, situated only five miles from Glasgow city centre and three miles from the Clyde Tunnel.

Rex Lyons of Offshore Workboats, already operating from the River Clyde Boatyard said, 'It's not often you are given the opportunity to move to a new, purpose built boat yard. The Clyde has been crying out for a facility like this and now the installation of the hoist adds greatly to its effectiveness.'

The River Clyde Boatyard is expected to attract a variety of marine businesses, including repairers, chandlers, joiners, carpenters, painters and others connected to the boat building and repair industries. It is envisaged that this will both support and create jobs in the area, as well as offering future training opportunities and other economic benefits to the local community. The specialised facilities will also retain the area's historical commercial connection with the Clyde and help promote activity on the river.
