Shortsea Terminal Underway at Flushing
01 Feb 2006
Dutch firm Kloosterboer has started construction of a shortsea container terminal at Flushing.
The introduction of the new terminal will give Kloosterboer the opportunity to create a depot function for shipping companies and will also optimise the outgoing flow of second hand cars with the construction of a ro-ro quay.
A rail connection to the terminal to create a trimodal facility is also planned.
Kloosterboer has six locations in the Netherlands and is also active in Norway and the Faroe Islands. Last year the company handled over 22,000 containers on specialist vessels as well as on the upper deck of reefer vessels. Containers are also shipped by inland barge from Rotterdam and Antwerp and a shortsea service is run between Zeebrugge and Flushing by means of coasters.
The total value of first phase investment at Flushing is nearly ?12m. When the second and third phases are completed, the terminal will be able to handle some 150,000 containers and 60,000 cars annually.
