Structural Repair for Fleetwood Ro-Ro Jetty

Structural Repairtechnique (SR), a division of specialist piling contractor Systems Geotechnique, has carried out a repair operation on the Stena Line ro-ro jetty at Fleetwood in Lancashire UK. The jetty, which handles freight and passenger vehicles destined to Larne in Northern Island, is formed by concrete crossheads supported on piles driven into the seabed.

Over a period of many years the concrete crossbeams have delaminated as a result of chloride attack from the marine environment. SR has been contracted to carry out sprayed concrete repair work to the crossheads together with the installation of an impressed current cathodic protection system.

The contract has been carried out in a tidal environment working from scaffold supported platforms beneath the jetty. Daily high tides which completely submerse the work platforms have limited the working hours.

The cathodic protection system required the drilling and grouting in of more than 1,000 discrete anodes which will be computer monitored. The main contractor for the repair project is Dew Pitchmastic, working for client Associated British Ports.
