Tees Takes Over White Gill Thrusters
01 Jan 2006
Tees Components Ltd of Saltburn UK has acquired White Gill bow and stern thrusters from Elliott Turbomachinery Ltd. The two companies have had a long association.
For the last six years Tees Components has been Elliott's principle subcontractor for the manufacture and assembly of thrusters units and for the previous 17 years was their principle heavy machinist.
With its established expertise in manufacturing the units and the transfer of key Elliott staff, Tees Components' new White Gill Thruster division will support existing and new customers with confidence.
White Gill thrusters have been supplied to vessels worldwide since Major Gill developed the design in the 1930s as an offshoot of his work on axial flow pumps.
They provide full continuous thrust through 360º to move a vessel in any desired direction, independent of ship speed.
The bow or stern thrusters can be used as a completely independent means of propulsion and can be powered by any engine or electric motor of the required capacity.
Tees Components recently completed its first project since the transfer of ownership, designing and supplying two horizontal shaft thrusters for double ended ferries used in the Nantucket Islands area off the east coast of the USA. Two more units are currently awaiting export for commissioning in oceanographic research vessels.
In addition to tendering for new units, Tees Components continues to provide support for existing installations through the supply of spares and technical advice.
