    Lifting products and services supplier Certex UK has been appointed as a main UK distributor for Demag Cranes and Components Ltd. The Demag Cranes group includes Gottwald Port Technology and is a global player in the market for portable port cranes. 

  • Markey Makes Firm Family Friends

    Seattle USA based marine winch systems specialist Markey Machinery Company has supplied a double drum TDSD-34 towing winch for the newbuild Ann T Cheramie, owned by Louisiana based Rene J Cheramie & Sons. 

  • Modular Lifting for Wave Power Units

    Four huge Pelamis P-750 wave power machines manufactured by Camcal were recently lifted from an Isle of Lewis dockside onto the specialist workboat M/V Sea Power which is operated by prime contractor A2SEA. The Poole UK based engineering firm Modulift Design & Consultancy (MDC) supplied a key component which ensured the safe lifting of the wave power machines. 

  • SOLAS Sets Safe Servicing Standards

    Amendments to Chapter III of SOLAS, which came into force on 1 July 2006, and the proper implementation of MSC1206 (incl MSC1093), a guidance note amplifying SOLAS requirements, together introduce new rules for looking after lifeboats and davits. The new rules and guidance require regular tests and inspections of lifeboats, release gear and davit winches on all SOLAS ships, and specify what these tests should be and who should do them.

  • Repower for Tour Boat Transplant

    Marine engineers at Southampton UK based Golden Arrow Marine have given a new lease of life to one of the south coast's most instantly recognisable sightseeing boats. The old Poole Belle spent its life taking holiday makers around Poole Harbour, Bournemouth Bay and the Solent. Following a major refit, the vessel now has a new name, a new home and new engines. 

  • Maprom Muscle Moves Danube Pushboats

    Maprom Engineering BV of the Netherlands is supplying water lubricated shaftline drive systems for a series of eight pushboats which are being upgraded and converted at two shipyards in Romania. 

  • Enhanced Waterjet Control for Small Boats

    Small craft with a high power to weight ratio tend to respond quickly to both internal and external disturbances. The characteristic high sensitivity of planing craft requires an advanced control system to optimise craft controllability and response. 

  • 'MouseBoat' Makes Debut at Seawork

    Hamilton Jet (UK) Ltd used the occasion of Seawork 2006 to launch their new blue ARROW waterjet control system, which is suitable for use with twin jet installations on a wide range of high speed workboats, patrol boats, crew boats, fireboats, landing barges and ferries. The system is suitable for monohulls or catamarans of approximately 8 to 16m length and can accommodate power outputs ranging from 270 to 1,340hp. 

  • Noise Reduction Insulation Measures Make Quiet Life for Wind Farm Workboat

    Offshore Provider, the wind farm logistical support vessel built by South Boats Special Projects and seen on the floating pontoon at Seawork 2006 last month, has had noise and vibration levels on board reduced by Salisbury UK based Halyard Marine Ltd.

    Two exhibitors at Seawork 2006 are responsible for power and propulsion on sister ships Mercuria and Sapele, which have recently entered service on London's River Thames.

  • Marine Claims Agents Simulate Life at Sea

    London based P&I insurance clubs have broadened their knowledge of claims after attending a five day course in simulation at South Tyneside College. On the course were two representatives from the Britannia Steamship Insurance Association and two members of Thomas Miller & Co's London branch. 

  • Warning to Shipowners, Cut the 'Wriggle Room' to the Minimum

    London law firm Lawrence Graham LLP says owners contracting for new ships should be extra careful about communication with the yard to ensure that they do actually get the ship they want, when they want it. 

  • 'Unsafe Berths and Ports

    As MJ was going to press, LA Marine, the specialist marine law team of Lester Aldridge Solicitors, was giving a presentation at their London office on the theme Unsafe Berths and Ports. The focus was to be on the legal elements of proving an unsafe berth or port claim and taking a practical look at the paperwork required.   • Dutch Consortium Wins Sohar Phase 3

    A consortium of Interbeton, Six Construct, and Van Oord has been awarded the 195m contract for the construction of quay walls and dredging (Phase 3) at Sohar Port in Oman. The client is the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Government of Oman. 

  • BMT SeaTech Studies Re-Design of Portsmouth Harbour Channel

    BMT SeaTech Ltd, a subsidiary of BMT Ltd, has recently completed a comprehensive study for Defence Estates South West. Forming part of the Portsmouth Harbour Regeneration Project, the study looks at the re-design of the deep water channel for Portsmouth Harbour in the light of its use by large future warships for the Royal Navy. 

  • New Quay Completed at Rye

    Construction of the Rye Fish Market Quay, situated on the western bank of the tidal River Rother near Rye, is now complete. Commissioned by the Environment Agency, designed by Atkins and constructed by Jackson Civil Engineering, the £4.7m project is one of only 11 registered fish landing sites in England and Wales. 

  • UK Consultation Paper on Dredging Regulations

    The Department for Communities and Local Government in the UK has issued a Consultation Paper on Draft Marine Minerals Dredging Regulations and Procedural Guidance. The document is aimed at the marine dredging industry, organisations who advise on dredging proposals, environmental groups and those who comment on individual dredging applications.

  • Technical Progress Trims Navaid Costs

    With light dues reduced by some 50% over the last decade, the General Lighthouse Authorities for the UK and Ireland have, in response, made giant strides in cutting costs through operational efficiencies and the development of new technologies. These were on proud display at a Technical Open Day held earlier this month in Harwich at the modern offices and depot of Trinity House. 

  • Navaids Maintenance Double for VTMS

    Leicester UK based VTMS Ltd has signed two major navaids maintenance contracts. VTMS will service and maintain the buoys and beacons of Forth Ports PLC in the rivers Forth and Tay over a five year period. A similar contract has been signed with Associated British Ports to service and maintain their buoys in the South Wales ports of Newport, Cardiff, Barry, Port Talbot and Swansea. 

  • 'Hall of Fame' for Text Message Navaids

    Victoria, Australia based Sealite Pty Ltd has celebrated its recent induction into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame with the introduction of 'Cell Phone Monitoring' for its range of LED lanterns.

    Sussex UK based navaids specialist Tideland Signal has launched a versatile, compact, long range LED lantern suitable for both land based installations and offshore structures.

  • ICE Plans Marine Renewables Conference for September

    The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has teamed with the International Association of Hydraulic Engineers to plan a Marine Renewable Energy Conference which will take place on 21 September at the London Stock Exchange. The event will bring together experts in the field to review the latest developments and consider the challenges ahead. 

  • CEDA Launches Best Paper Award

    The first ever Central Dredging Association (CEDA) Environmental Steering Committee (ESC) Best Paper Award was presented at the 31st PIANC Congress, held recently at Estoril in Portugal, by Neville Burt, chairman of CEDA's ESC. 

  • HRH The Princess Royal Opens Humber International Terminal 2

    Associated British Ports opened the Port of Immingham's new £59.5m dedicated coal handling facility, Humber International Terminal 2, with a ceremony presided over by HRH The Princess Royal. During her visit, HRH was taken on a guided tour of HIT 2 by ABP group chief executive Bo Lerenius and ABP port director for Grimsby & Immingham, Nick Palmer. 

  • Sea Lord Leaps into Education

    A milestone in the history of one of the UK's newest universities occurred late last month when Sir Alan West, former First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff, was installed as the first Chancellor of Southampton Solent University. Sir Alan West's appointment reflects the strength of the University's maritime provision, including its Warsash Maritime Centre, which provides education, training, research and consultancy services to the maritime and offshore industries. 

  • Nigel Gee Retires

    Nigel Gee has retired as managing director of the eponymous BMT Nigel Gee and Associates Ltd, to be replaced by John Bonafoux, a founding partner of the company and technical director there since 1996. The Southampton UK based design office for innovative, high speed ships and boats is currently working on car ferries, a 50 knot naval research craft, and several vessels based on its patented Pentamaran design.

    HATLAPA has taken over the former ship technology and cargo handling division of KGW Schweriner Maschinenbau GmbH and integrated it into a newly founded company, KGW Marine GmbH, located at Schwerin in Germany. 

  • Coast Map News Online

    The UK Government agency CEFAS (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science), wishing to reach more people and increase the level of dialogue on coastal mapping issues, has relaunched its newsletter, Coast Map, as a monthly in an electronic rather than paper format. Containing news and articles about marine and costal data and information, it aims for a quick turnaround of submissions, a wider set of contributors and a wider audience. 

  • £2.8bn Bid for ABP

    Associated British Ports looks set to be taken over by a consortium led by American investment bank Goldman Sachs after that group's improved bid, valuing ABP at £2.79bn, forced a rival Australian led group to pull out. 

  • Free PLA Handbook

    The Port of London Authority has launched a new free publication to promote the range of terminals and facilities within its jurisdiction. The full colour A4 size 'Port of London Handbook' runs to 132 pages and will be a useful tool for people in logistics, transport, shipping, freight, import/export, and related fields. 

  • Bremerhaven's CT4 Heads for First Berth Completion

    The first of four more berths on the Bremerhaven Container Terminal's (BCT) new 500m CT 4 expansion site is due for completion in Autumn with work reported largely on target. 

  • Long Launch for Naval Base Newbuild

    The first complete ship to be built in Portsmouth Naval Base for nearly 40 years was loaded out from the VT Shipbuilding assembly hall last month. The 80m Offshore Patrol Vessel Helicopter (OPVH) HMS Clyde marked the renaissance of shipbuilding in the Base.

    Aker Yards and the Damen Shipyards Group are planning to establish a joint venture owning the Damen Shipyards Okean yard at Mykolayiv in the Ukraine.

  • Lerwick Port Authority Gets a Powerful New Tug/Pilot Vessel

    A powerful new tug/pilot vessel for the Lerwick Port Authority arrived at the Shetland port during the first few days of June. The 20m vessel, with a 20 ton bollard pull, is a direct replacement for the existing 18.8m Knab and bears the same name. Like its predecessor, the new addition will work alongside the port's larger tug Kerbister that has been in service in the port since 1990.

    Fairmount Marine, with its headquarters in Rotterdam, has taken delivery of the third of their new 200 ton bollard pull long range deepsea tugs. 

  • 'Valiant B' Gives Plantain a Major Boost

    The capability of Falmouth based towage and marine services contractor Plantain UK Ltd has been given a major boost with the delivery of their new twin-screw tug Valiant B. 

  • 'Afon Caradog', Britain's Biggest Newbuild

    The Holyhead Towing Company Ltd has taken delivery of its fifth multi-purpose shallow draft tug/work vessel from Hepworth Shipyard Ltd at Paull, on Humberside. Named Afon Caradog, it is the only tug of any size to be built in a British yard this year.
