Modular Lifting for Wave Power Units
01 Jul 2006
Four huge Pelamis P-750 wave power machines manufactured by Camcal were recently lifted from an Isle of Lewis dockside onto the specialist workboat M/V Sea Power which is operated by prime contractor A2SEA. The Poole UK based engineering firm Modulift Design & Consultancy (MDC) supplied a key component which ensured the safe lifting of the wave power machines.
The Modulift spreader system was chosen to guarantee the cost effective transfer of the equipment from dockside for its journey to the wave farm site under construction off the northern cost of Portugal. The system allows users to easily bolt together different sized segments to create the exact size of spreader needed for any particular job.
A2SEA technical director Johnny Lykke said, 'The P-750 sections vary in length so we needed the ability to reconfigure the spreader when required to lengths of 15m and 18m.
The Modulift system made this easy and helped to save a lot of time and effort during the lifting process. The nature of Modulift means that we are also able to make use of the same spreader system for future wind turbine transportation jobs, making it a very cost effective tool.'
MDC provided full project support and consultation for the P-750 lift. Due to the exacting lengths of spreader beams required, MDC produced rig drawings based on the Mod 250 system, enabling the customer to fully integrate the spreader beams during the early planning stages of the transportation process.
'The final solution consisted of one Modulift spreader set as opposed to a separate spreader for each task, added MDC director Nick Latham. 'Unlike traditional spreaders, Modulift doesn't need heavy engineering work to be modified for different lifts.'
